Use Claude with Google Drive or Microsoft 365 without oversharing

What you will be able to do

You will connect Claude to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 at a high level—knowing who must approve connectors, what staff may share, and that Claude only sees what those accounts can already see.

Connectors in plain terms

Claude can use connectors so you ask questions against files and mail you already have, instead of downloading and pasting everything.

Verified Anthropic help (re-check if menus change):

• Google Workspace connectors — Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive
• Microsoft 365 connector setup — SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook, Teams (read; optional write tools with extra admin consent)

Availability spans Free through Enterprise on Anthropic’s current help articles, but Team/Enterprise owners must enable connectors at the org level before people authenticate. Consumer users authenticate their own accounts.

Permissions that matter

• Claude mirrors the signed-in user’s existing permissions—it should not open a Drive folder that person cannot open in the browser
• Access is on demand when someone asks a question that needs it (per Anthropic’s connector help)
• Team/Enterprise admins can enable, restrict, or remove connectors for the organization
• Write tools (send mail, create files, Teams messages, and similar) are a separate, higher-risk decision—turn them on only with a written shop rule

What staff may share

Allow: files already ok on the shared drive for that role; templates; job folders without secrets.

Forbid in chat and in connector asks: payroll exports, unrestricted patient charts, card data, password vaults, “whole company Drive” fishing expeditions.

Put the rule next to business data in Claude.

Consumer training note

Anthropic’s Google Workspace help notes that if you use consumer products and allow model improvement, content you copy/paste from connectors into chats may be treated like other chat content under that setting; raw connector retrieval is described differently. Read the current connector and training articles before you set policy.

Try this job: one controlled Drive ask

1. Admin enables only the connectors you need (or you connect a personal test account on Free/Pro).
2. Put one anonymized SOP in a clearly named folder.
3. Ask Claude to outline that file only; require [NEED] for gaps.
4. Confirm the outline against the file yourself.
5. Decide whether write tools stay off (recommended default for most shops).
