Honest answers

Get ChatGPT to stop agreeing with everything you say

Ask for the problems before the praise, don't tell it which answer you want, and save that rule so every chat starts honest.

The short answer

ChatGPT agrees with you because it is built to be helpful and pleasant, and it reads your question for the answer you seem to want. To get an honest answer, do three things: ask for the problems before the praise, tell it plainly that disagreeing is part of the job, and don't reveal which answer you prefer. Then save those rules in its settings so every new chat starts that way.

Why it keeps saying "great idea"

This is not you imagining it. In April 2025, OpenAI rolled back a ChatGPT update and wrote that the version it removed was "overly flattering or agreeable." The company has kept working on it since, but the pull toward a friendly yes is still there in every chat tool.

Two things make it worse:

  • Your wording leaks your hope. "Isn't this a good plan?" invites a yes.
  • You asked for help, not a review. "Help me with this email" gets a polished version of the email, not an opinion on whether to send it.

Ask for the problems first

Paste your plan, your email, or your price list. Then send this:

Before you say anything good about this, list the three
biggest problems with it. Be specific. If you think it is
a bad idea, say so plainly and tell me why.

Asking for problems first changes what the answer is about. You get the weak spots while they still matter, not buried under a paragraph of compliments.

Don't tell it which answer you want

Compare these two questions:

  • "I think we should raise our prices this spring. Good idea, right?"
  • "Two options: raise prices this spring, or hold them until next year. Argue for each side. Then tell me which one you would pick and why."

The first one tells ChatGPT the answer you want. The second one makes it do the work.

Leading

I think we should raise our prices this spring. Good idea, right?

Tells it the answer you want.

Neutral

Two options: raise prices this spring, or hold until next year. Argue each side, then pick one and say why.

Makes it do the work.

Same decision, two ways to ask.

Give it a job that includes disagreeing

People take a role seriously, and so does a chat tool. Try:

Act as a careful friend who has run a small business for
twenty years. Your job is to find what I missed, not to
make me feel good. Ask me questions if something is unclear.

Make it stick: save the rule in settings

You don't have to type this every time. In ChatGPT on a computer, open Settings → Personalization, make sure customization is turned on, and paste your rule into Custom Instructions. On iPhone or Android, the same box is under Settings → Customize ChatGPT. It applies to all your chats.

A line you can paste:

Be direct. When I share a plan or a draft, start with the
weak points. If you disagree with me, say so and explain
why. Don't praise something unless it is clearly good. If
you are not sure, say you are not sure.

Claude and Gemini have their own places for standing instructions. If you can't find it, paste the same line at the top of the chat.

When it flips the moment you push back

If you ask "Are you sure?" and it changes its answer right away, that is the same habit in reverse. Ask instead: "Don't change your answer just because I asked. What would have to be true for you to be wrong?" Then check the facts yourself. Here is a five-minute way to fact-check an AI answer.

What this does not fix

An honest-sounding answer is not the same as a correct one. ChatGPT still gets things wrong, and it does not know your customers, your town, or your bank balance. Use it to find the questions. For money, legal, and health decisions, you or someone who knows your situation still decides.

ChatGPT leans toward agreeing. Then: Ask for problems first; Hide the answer you hope for; Give it permission to disagree; Save the rule in settings.
