Voice, not typing

Talk to ChatGPT like a phone call, no typing needed

Open the app, tap the Voice icon in the message bar, allow the microphone, and start talking. You can interrupt it like a person.

The short answer

Yes, you can talk to ChatGPT out loud, back and forth, like a phone call. On an iPhone or Android phone, install the ChatGPT app and sign in. Tap the Voice icon in the message bar, next to where you would type. Allow the microphone if it asks, pick a voice the first time, and start talking. To hang up, tap the exit button. On a computer, go to chatgpt.com and tap the Voice icon in the message box.

You do need to be signed in. Without an account you can dictate a message, but you can't start a voice conversation.

Why voice helps if typing feels like a chore

A lot of people who feel unsure about AI are really unsure about typing the "right" question. Talking takes that away. You say it the way you would say it to a helpful neighbor. No spelling, no special words. And you can interrupt it, just like a real person, if it starts going off in the wrong direction.

Three settings worth a look first

Open Settings → Voice in the app:

  • Voice and Language. Pick a voice you like, and set the language you usually speak. That helps it understand you.
  • Background conversations. Turn this on if you want to keep talking while you use other apps or lock your phone.
  • Start with Voice. Turn this on if you want the app to open straight into a voice conversation.

Depending on your plan and app version, you may also see options called Live, Advanced, and Standard. Live is the newest back-and-forth version. You can leave it on whatever is selected.

What to say on your first call

Start with a real job, not a test. A few openers that work:

  • "I run a small cleaning company. Help me figure out how to price a move-out clean. Ask me one question at a time."
  • "I have to call a customer about a late payment tomorrow. Help me plan what to say."
  • "Wait until I say I'm done before you answer. Okay, here's my problem."

That last one is useful. OpenAI's help page says you can ask it to wait until you're ready, which helps when you think out loud.

Help it hear you

  • Use a quiet room or headphones.
  • One person at a time. It is built for one-on-one conversation, and it may answer when two people talk to each other.
  • On an iPhone, you can open Control Center during the call, tap Mic Mode, and turn on Voice Isolation to cut background noise.

After the call: read the transcript

When you end the call, a written transcript is added to the chat. It may not match every word exactly, but it's enough to copy the useful parts into an email or a note.

ChatGPT can still be wrong, especially about dates, times, and places. If an answer matters, check it. Here is a quick way to fact-check an AI answer.

What not to say out loud

Treat it like a conversation in a coffee shop. Don't read out card numbers, passwords, or a customer's health details. OpenAI says audio clips from Live and Advanced conversations are kept with the chat for 30 days. If your business handles private customer data, read whether customer data is safe with AI tools first.

Limits to know

Voice time has limits that depend on your plan. Free accounts get limited access, and paid plans get more. If you hit a limit, you can keep going in text.
