Copilot in Excel not showing? The 5 checks that bring the button back

For MRO distributors and other small teams on Microsoft 365: five checks that fix Copilot in Excel not showing, plus a prompt for your stock sheet.

Your purchasing lead looks for Copilot in Excel on this week's stock export. It's not showing, so she filters by hand all morning.

The short answer

When Copilot in Excel is not showing, it's usually not gone. Look in the lower-right corner of the workbook first, then check license, update, update channel and privacy settings, in that order. Microsoft moved the button off the ribbon in 2026. None of these checks needs a support ticket.

Why Copilot in Excel keeps not showing

Microsoft's own help pages name two reasons.

First, the button moved. Microsoft replaced the ribbon button with a "Copilot Dynamic Action Button" in the corner of the workbook. The rollout began in April 2026 and was set to finish by June 2026, per Microsoft Support.

Second, the account needs attention. Microsoft Learn lists the usual causes: a newly assigned license that hasn't spread yet, being signed in with a personal and a work account at once, device-based licensing, the Semi-Annual Enterprise update channel, and privacy settings.

Step 1: Look for Copilot in Excel in the lower-right corner

Open any workbook and look at the lower-right corner. Press F6 on any platform to jump to the button. If you want it back on the ribbon, right-click it and choose Move to ribbon. Microsoft says the button only appears for users who have Copilot access, so if it's nowhere, go to Step 2.

Step 2: Check you have a license that includes Copilot in Excel

Microsoft's Copilot in Excel FAQ lists four kinds of access: Microsoft 365 Personal or Family with an AI credits plan, Microsoft 365 Premium, a commercial Microsoft Copilot subscription, or a Copilot Chat-eligible business or enterprise subscription. Check yours in your Microsoft 365 account settings.

If you're signed in to Office with a personal and a work account, sign out of the one without the license. If you're unsure, send your admin this:

Hi [admin name], Copilot isn't showing in Excel for me.
Can you confirm:
1. Which Copilot license is assigned to [your work email]?
2. Is it user-based (not device-based)?
3. Is Copilot blocked by any policy for my account?
Thanks.

Step 3: Update Excel and refresh the license

On Windows, install the latest Office update. Then go to File > Account > Update License. Close and restart every Microsoft 365 app so the refresh takes effect.

On a Mac, update Office, then open the Excel menu and choose About Excel > More Info... > Refresh License. Restart all the apps.

Step 4: Check your update channel

Microsoft says Copilot features aren't available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. You need Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. Go to File > Account and read Product Information. If it says Semi-Annual, ask whoever manages your PCs to move you. Until then, Excel for the web works without a channel change.

Step 5: Turn on the two privacy settings Copilot needs

Go to File > Account, then under Account Privacy select Manage Settings. Turn on Experiences that analyze your content, then scroll down and turn on All connected experiences. If your company manages these, your admin controls them.

Once the button is back, save your usual Epicor P21 or NetSuite inventory export as .xlsx, open it, and paste this into Copilot:

This sheet is our stock list. Columns: [Item number], [Description],
[On hand], [Reorder point], [Last 90 days sold], [Unit cost].
1. List every item where On hand is below Reorder point.
2. Sort that list by Last 90 days sold, highest first.
3. Add a column with On hand x Unit cost.
4. Put the result on a new sheet called "Reorder check".
Don't change the original sheet. Explain each formula in one line.

Run the checks in this order. Source: Microsoft Support, 2026.
  • First, look: check the lower-right corner, or press F6.
  • Then, account: confirm the license, Update License, restart.
  • Still missing, channel: move off Semi-Annual Enterprise.
  • Last, privacy: turn on both connected-experience settings.

Example (illustrative): an MRO distributor's purchasing desk

A buyer at a small industrial supply house finds the button in the corner. Her colleague's laptop shows nothing: File > Account says Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. Their IT contact moves it to Monthly Enterprise, and both now run the reorder prompt on Monday's export.

At a glance

  • Problem: Copilot not showing in Excel on two machines.
  • What was set up: button found in the corner; one PC moved off Semi-Annual.
  • Tools it lives in: Excel for Microsoft 365, the P21 inventory export.
  • What the owner still does: decides what actually gets reordered.
  • Payoff: not measured here. Time the manual filter once, then the prompt, and compare.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Buying another add-on before checking the corner. The button may simply have moved.
  • Letting Copilot decide what to order. Microsoft says it can make mistakes. Check the list yourself.
  • Running it on your only copy. Copilot edits the workbook directly. Use a copy, undo or previous versions.
  • Opening a checked-out SharePoint file. Microsoft says that triggers "Unsupported file state". Check it back in first.

Where does Microsoft now put the Copilot button in Excel?

If it still doesn't work

Open the file in Excel for the web. If Copilot shows there, the problem is your desktop install or channel, not your license. For editing, Microsoft says Formulas > Calculation Options must be set to Automatic. If the web shows nothing either, send your admin the note from Step 2.

Doing this inside the tools you already use

If you'd rather have the reorder check built and connected for you, Deeplathe's developers can set up a custom version inside the tools you already run. It pulls the P21 or NetSuite export, flags items below reorder point, and drafts the reorder list in your Excel. You review it, change what you want and approve it. Nothing goes to a supplier without you. See how that works at /solutions.

FAQ

Why is Copilot not showing in Excel when I have Microsoft 365?

Most often the button just moved to the lower-right corner. Otherwise your plan may not include Copilot, the license may need a refresh under File > Account, you may be on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel, or privacy settings may hide it.

Where do I find Copilot in Excel now?

Microsoft placed it in the lower-right corner of the workbook as a Dynamic Action Button. Press F6 to jump to it. To use the old spot, right-click the button and select Move to ribbon. Windows and Mac remember that choice for Excel.

Does Copilot in Excel need AutoSave on?

Not according to Microsoft's current Copilot in Excel tips page, which says Copilot runs with AutoSave on or off. Turning it off lets you try changes without saving them.

Keep these

  • Look in the lower-right corner before anything else.
  • Refresh the license, then restart every Office app.
  • Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel means no Copilot.
  • Check Copilot's list before anything goes to a supplier.
