ChatGPT vs Claude
Pick ChatGPT when the job needs breadth
ChatGPT for images, research, and connected apps; Claude for careful long writing. Check live plan pages for price.
What you will be able to do
You will pick ChatGPT when the desk job needs breadth—images, research sketches, and connected apps—and know when to open Claude instead for careful long writing.
The short answer
For most local service shops, ChatGPT often wins when one assistant must cover mixed work in one place: image drafts, web-assisted research, and a wide app/connector surface that changes often. Claude tends to win when the writing must stay careful across a long draft (SOPs, proposals, handbook sections, multi-page customer packets).
This is the ChatGPT-first twin of Pick Claude or ChatGPT by the job. Same facts; different lead. The useful question is which tool matches the job in front of you, not which logo is “better.”
When ChatGPT breadth usually wins
- Exploring several formats in one sitting (outline, table, short caption set, image draft)
- Jobs that lean on connected apps you already use there (Drive, Microsoft 365, and similar — see connectors)
- Fast research sketches and vendor-option lists you will verify yourself — see vendor compare
- Mixed “help me think, then draft three short options” sessions
- Building a reusable shop helper as a custom GPT when your plan allows it — see Projects and custom GPTs
Breadth is not the same as accuracy. Whatever tool you open, verify prices, features, and policies yourself.
When Claude usually wins instead
- Rewriting a long, messy SOP into a clean packet people will follow for months — see Claude for long documents
- Tightening a proposal narrative without inventing scope — Claude’s proposals note or ChatGPT’s proposals note
- Two-pass draft/tighten work where tone and structure matter more than tool variety
Dental, med spa, HVAC, and trade owners often live in documents that outlast a chat tab. That is Claude’s natural fit—and still a good reason to keep both tools for different jobs.
Do not invent a price contest
Public plan prices change. Do not budget from memory or from a blog table. Check OpenAI’s current pricing and Anthropic’s current pricing for the accounts you would actually buy. Compare seats, admin needs, and usage limits—not a screenshot from last quarter.
Same desk rules on both tools
- Name the job in one sentence before you open the chat
- Hand over only the facts the draft must not invent; mark gaps as [NEED]
- Two passes beat “make it perfect”
- A person still sends customer-facing copy
Those habits are the same as drafting customer emails and stopping invented facts in ChatGPT.
Try this job: pick the tool in ten minutes
- Write the job: “Sketch five Instagram caption angles plus one image direction for a real offer” or “Rewrite our truck-close SOP into a one-page checklist.”
- If you need mixed formats, research breadth, or connected files in one sitting, open ChatGPT.
- If the output will live for months and many people will follow it carefully, open Claude.
- Run the same facts and [NEED] rule in either tool.
- Keep the winner for that job type in a one-line team note (“caption + image brainstorms → ChatGPT; SOPs → Claude”).
