Everyday definition
Agentic AI means AI systems that can work toward a goal in more than one step: look things up, choose an action, use a tool, check what happened, and continue—within limits you set.
In a shop: not only “draft this email,” but “watch for new quote requests, draft the follow-up, and ping the coordinator if nobody sent it in 48 hours.”
That is related to—but not identical with—AI agents for small business. “Agentic” describes the behavior pattern; “agent” is often the product label.

Technical definition (still short)
In technical talk, agentic systems combine a language model (or similar planner) with:
- A goal or task specification
- Tools (calendar, CRM, email, search, files)
- A loop: plan → act → observe → update
- Guardrails: permissions, budgets, stop conditions, human approval gates
“Agentic” is not a magic model name. It is an architecture pattern. A single chat completion with no tools is not agentic, even if the marketing says so.
What changes for a local business

Most dental, HVAC, and med spa wins still start as assistant or simple workflow automation. Agentic designs earn their complexity when handoffs are many and rules are clear.
How to test a vendor’s “agentic” claim
Ask:
- What tools does it call?
- What can it do without a human?
- What always escalates?
- Where do I see the log?
- How do I turn a bad loop off?
If they cannot answer on a whiteboard, you are looking at branding.
